Welcome to Gloster City

When a passionate and genuine group of bird fanciers come together, we realise that our differences are not as great as we once thought.

A Remarkable Judging Experience in Lebanon

The Lebanese Gloster Club (LGC) was founded in 2018 by a small yet passionate group of five Gloster enthusiasts. That same year, they held their first all-Gloster show, marking the beginning of an exciting journey for Gloster fanciers in Lebanon.

In 2019, I received a phone call from Michel Abou Khalil, the club’s president - a true gentleman and a dedicated leader who has been steering the LGC with passion and determination. That conversation led to an official invitation to judge the second edition of their annual show. At first, I reflected on the opportunity, but I soon realised how important it was to accept. With the club still in its early stages, I felt a strong responsibility to support and guide the Lebanese fanciers in the right direction.

At the Gloster Fancy Canary Council (GFCC-UK), we invest countless hours and travel long distances to uphold and explain the Gloster Standard of Excellence. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, some breeders continue to cross Glosters with other canary breeds - especially Norwich and colour canaries - causing widespread genetic dilution and confusion among newcomers. This remains a delicate yet crucial issue, which I will address in greater depth in a separate article.

In Lebanon, however, I encountered something truly unique - a nation of warm-hearted people brought together by their shared passion for the Gloster Canary. The Lebanese Gloster Club radiates an unmatched spirit of unity, enthusiasm, and dedication. This is why I call Lebanon “The Country with a Message”, a phrase inspired by the monument of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa.

Throughout the weekend, I experienced firsthand the club’s strong sense of camaraderie, friendship, and hospitality. Smiles, handshakes, and heartfelt embraces filled the event. The prize-giving ceremony was unlike any other I have witnessed—over 50 trophies were presented, reflecting the club’s commitment to recognizing excellence. More importantly, the exhibitors embraced all the knowledge they could gather before, during, and after the show. Michel explained the club’s ambitious vision to become one of the world’s top Gloster clubs, and I have no doubt they have all the right ingredients to achieve it.

My time in Lebanon was truly unforgettable, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Lebanese Gloster Club. With their passion, determination, and unity, I have no doubt they will achieve great success in the years to come.
