A Prestigious Judging Experience at the National Gloster Fancy Canary Show
The inaugural edition of the National Gloster Fancy Canary Show took place on December 1, 2019 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. This event was established to honour the legacy of John Thornton, one of the founding fathers of the Gloster Fancy Canary. A historic solid silver trophy was presented by one of his daughters, marking the beginning of what is set to become one of the most prestigious all-Gloster shows in the UK.
The show was an impressive gathering, with over 500 Glosters benched in a stunning venue that provided the perfect setting for such a significant occasion. Exhibitors and fanciers came together to celebrate their shared passion, ensuring a day that will be remembered by all in attendance.
For me, this event was a double privilege, as I had the honour of judging alongside Keith Baker, Chairman of the IGBA and a highly respected figure in the Gloster Fancy worldwide. Keith’s vast knowledge, experience, and contributions to the Gloster community have made him one of the all-time greats and his role within the GFCC further underscores his influence on the breed’s development. Judging alongside him was both a learning experience and a true pleasure, making this show even more special.
The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and dedication, with fanciers engaging in meaningful discussions about the Gloster Fancy’s future. From the meticulous preparation of exhibits to the seamless organisation of the event, every aspect reflected the commitment of those involved.
Although this was a successful debut, the National Gloster Fancy Canary Show did not continue after COVID19 which is a great pity since it had all the ingredients to set a strong foundation for the years ahead.
